South Central Coast

The South Central Coast of Vietnam is very touristy and filled with attractions such as swimming, surfing, scuba-diving, etc. It is composed of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, most of which are unexplored and overlooked. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s capital is located here as well as historical relics of the Cham population and a memorial dedicated to the My Lai or Son My Massacre.

Getting There

The cities of Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, and Cam Ranh have airports that tourists can fly into by air. There is a rail route that cuts through the middle of the South Central Region as well as a couple highways if you intend to travel by road.

Areas of Interest:

Nha Trang – This city is known to be a smaller version of the city of Danang in the north with it’s beautiful scenery and like Danang is bordered by mountains and a beach dotted by small islands, making this a famous seaside resort. A monsoon season runs from October to mid-December with weather that can get pretty chilly. There are many things to seed and do in this area such as visiting museums, doing to various beaches and waterfalls, indulging in boating and other water sports, and of course hang out at various bars and restaurants in the city for entertainment. There is also the Nha Trang Cathedral that overlooks the city considering that the area has a very strong Catholic population.

Phan Thiet --- This is a city that is infamously known for its famous fish sauce and is populated by the descendants of the native Cham people. Visitors can visit a small fishing harbor, the Phan Thiet beach front, and the Victory Monument, and even a golf resort.

Son My (My Lai) --- This rural area during the Vietnam War was infamously known to be the city of horrific crimes and killings by US troops in 1968. This area has beautiful landscapes of rice paddies, vegetable gardens, and eucalyptus trees. The city of Xom Lang was the focal point where these horrific crimes took place and where a memorial, called the My Son Memorial currently stands. The memorial depicts a woman holding up her fist in anger while holding possibly her dead child in her arms while her family dies around her. Surrounding the monument, remnants and recreations of the tragedy remain marked with a listening of those names that once resided in the area. This city has been compared to other historical cities such as Angkor Wat, Bagan, and Borobudur because they were once the leading spiritual centers for Hinduism and/or Buddhism that fell into ruin. While the ruins of My Son are not as humungous or impressive as other historical areas around the world, they still offer some education and emotional impact, especially due to the influence gained from the tragic Vietnam War.

Ca Na --- This city, like most of the South Central Coast is known for its beaches that are dotted with boulders, a small pagoda, and other small temple areas that make the area look beautiful. It is a perfect area for those who want to travel off the beaten path and want to be adventurous.

Quang Ngai – This is the capital of the province with the same name. It has literally no attractions, and is mostly a memorial pilgrimage for those who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. Around World War 2, this area was an important center of resistance against the French as well as a stronghold during the Franco-Viet Minh War in the 1950s or 1960s.
